Vehicle description

This 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Gran Coupe is a thoroughly reengineered muscle-era icon that combines bold factory luxury appointments with extensive performance modifications centered around a period-built 440ci V8 “Six-Barrel” configuration. Finished in striking purple over a black and purple interior, this Barracuda has been significantly upgraded, rebuilt, and refined over multiple phases of ownership, resulting in a highly customized Mopar that blends classic styling, street presence, and serious straight-line performance.

Refurbished around 2021 under previous ownership, the car underwent a comprehensive transformation that included a full repaint in its vivid purple finish, replacement of the trunk floor and lower rear valance, and refinishing of exterior brightwork. Black “hockey-stick” graphics with 440 callouts accentuate the long fastback profile, while Gran Coupe trim details—including satin-silver grille and taillight panel, rocker moldings, rear wing, dual side mirrors, and Rallye dual-scoop hood—preserve the model’s original luxury-performance identity. Additional elements such as hood pins, fender-mounted turn signal indicators, and rectangular dual exhaust outlets exiting through the rear valance reinforce the car’s unmistakable muscle-era character.

The stance and chassis have been significantly enhanced to support the drivetrain’s output. Rallye 15-inch wheels with chrome trim rings are mounted with staggered BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires, measuring 245/60 front and 275/60 rear, with widened rear wheels contributing to a more aggressive footprint. Power-assisted front disc brakes and rear drums provide stopping capability appropriate for street use, while a Firm Feel steering box improves steering precision and road feel. Further chassis upgrades include welded frame-rail connectors, reinforced torque boxes, front and rear anti-roll bars with polyurethane bushings, aftermarket torsion bars, stainless-steel brake lines, and air shocks. Additional service work under prior ownership included replacement of front brake calipers, wheel bearings, rear axles, and other suspension components, contributing to a more cohesive driving experience.

Inside, the Gran Coupe trim level delivers a distinctly upscale interpretation of the Barracuda platform. The cabin features front bucket seats trimmed in black and purple vinyl, complemented by a matching rear bench seat and black carpeting. A center console and overhead console highlight the Gran Coupe’s luxury focus, while Vintage Air climate control adds modern comfort. Additional features include a rebuilt Slap Stik shifter, woodgrain trim, three-point front seat belts, rear lap belts, and a Custom Autosound AM/FM stereo system with Bluetooth capability. The system functions intermittently, consistent with its vintage integration.

Instrumentation is presented through Rallye-style gauges including a 150-mph speedometer, 8,000-rpm tachometer, clock, and auxiliary readouts for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and charging system status. Additional AutoMeter gauges mounted beneath the dash provide supplemental monitoring.

Power comes from a 440ci V8 believed to have been manufactured in 1976 and installed in the vehicle in 2010. The engine features a distinctive triple two-barrel Holley carburetor setup, consistent with the legendary Six-Barrel configuration, and has been upgraded with Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads, aftermarket camshaft, roller rocker arms, double-roller timing chain, Edelbrock intake manifold, electronic ignition system, finned valve covers, and a high-volume oil pump. Cooling is managed by an aluminum radiator and Derale electric cooling fans, while additional components such as the starter, ignition system parts, fuel lines, and battery cables were replaced under prior ownership. The engine bay is further detailed with Ringbrothers hood hinges, enhancing both function and presentation.

Power is routed through a rebuilt TorqueFlite 727 three-speed automatic transmission equipped with a high-stall torque converter, delivering strong acceleration characteristics suited to the engine’s torque output. A robust 8¾-inch Sure-Grip rear end with 3.91:1 gearing transfers power to the pavement, providing the aggressive gearing combination expected from a properly built Mopar performance setup. TTi headers feed into a dual exhaust system with Pypes mufflers, producing a deep and authoritative exhaust note that complements the car’s performance character.

This 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe represents a highly individualized expression of classic Mopar muscle, combining luxury-oriented factory equipment with extensive mechanical upgrades and a visually striking presentation. With its rebuilt 440ci powerplant, reinforced chassis, and distinctive custom styling, it stands as a compelling example of a heavily enhanced muscle car built for both street presence and spirited driving enjoyment.
